When you file taxes, you are basically sending your information to the Internal Revenue Service, aka “the IRS”. That’s a department of the U.S. government that’s responsible for making sure people pay the right taxes, but also get back any money the government owes them. There are two main ways you can get your info to the IRS – via paper or electronically. If you want to send the info electronically (which is much faster and safer) you will either use a software program (like TurboTax, TaxSlayer, etc.) or you will work with a tax preparer who will use their own version of the software to send your info to the IRS.
